pretty awesome. Only worked 3 days so far this year! Looking forward to going ice fishing for smelt this weekend with a crew and a couple of 30 packs of beer. And bacon to cook on the wood stove.

Doing well, busy as a damn bee at work, having fun with life otherwise and headed to beautiful pleasant freaking cold Nebraska at the end of the month for work. I've already scouted out the best beer spots in Omaha (and places to buy in Council Bluffs - since distribution differs from state to state), but other than the Strategic Air And Space Museum, I'm not sure that there is anything else worth seeing or checking out while I'm there (getting in a day early, leaving the day after work is over in the late afternoon).

Anyone know much about Omaha from firsthand experience?

I went to a lot of clearance sales, but I think those are going to be done with about a week sooner than I expected. I am still waiting to exchange Christmas gifts with three or four people. So I think Christmas is going to be finally done on January 17th.

Haha. Red Writer suggested people change their names. I think I'll keep it the whole day.

Yeah, Mr. Owl watched Falling Skies and Under the Dome and really liked both. I thought they both looked terrible. Eventually I did watch FS, which I just finished. Horrible writing and most of the time it was verge hate-watching, but I did kind of like the last few eps of the latest season. Now he's telling me he tried to go back to FS and UtD and thinks they're both dumb and he must have been out of his mind.

I watched the pilot for The After that Amazon was pushing but it turns out they never picked up the show.

This happened to us once.

My husband bought/sold a bunch of stuff using one of those online stock things. Hardly made any money on it and has mostly given up on the idea.

Anyway, he forgot to fill out some form on the taxes, and we got a letter saying that we did not report about $36,000 dollars and we owed like another $6000.

This is total BS. We have never made enough money to owe $6000 much less an extra $6000.

Anyway, he filled out the forms again and we did not owe an $6000 dollars. I can't remember if we owed anything, if we did it was much less than $100.

Whatever report they were looking at that said we gained about $36,000 must also say we lost about $36,000, so why did they bother with the letter? Just say you forgot to fill out this form you owe an extra fifty bucks or something.

Yeah, I don't think I would go back to trying to watch it without someone I know and trust convincing me that it was worth the watch. But I am of the belief that King's works when brought to movie/TV are either AMAZING (Shawshank, Stand By Me, Shining, Green Mile) or HORRIBLE (Dream Catcher, Tommyknockers, The Langoliers) with very little in the middle, and for the record, as much as I love The Mist, I still don't know how I completely feel about the ending, several years later. It stuck with me. That was an amazing sequence from a cinematic experience / storytelling perspective (and as a huge fan of the original story, rather unexpected).

I was a big fan of Wild Kingdom when I was growing up, so when we went to Omaha for business (this was like 15 years ago) we went to the zoo.

My husband loved Mi Casa pizza, but I didn't really.

And we had to stay in Council Bluffs, because the Omaha tourist info place was closed on a Sunday, and we couldn't get any motel coupons. But that turned out for the best, as we had a funny story about staying at that place, and it was also very near some casinos, and one of them had the best prime rib on a buffet for a good price, and I don't even like stuff like steak usually.

Anyway, not much help for you I'm afraid, cause it was fifteen years ago.

Minden's pretty far if my map skills are any indication. In fairer weather I would contemplate driving a distance for stuff, but with the unknowns in the end of January in Nebraska, I'm trying not to rely on driving much if I can avoid it (other than for beer, because priorities - yes, I'm one of those people). Interesting and different can always be fun.

Normally I would feel really guilty going to a zoo without my 3 year old daughter, but after looking at the Omaha Zoo... I may have to rethink that. Wow.

AND because I belong to a reciprocal zoo, I get discounted admission... and my cousin's wife is the point of contact for information... the world is toooooooo small.

The year started out on a sour note with working New Year's Eve into New Year's Day a few hours.

Today we are glovebagging Asbestos pipe insulation prior to removal of the brown ducting on right. Bags have gloves sealed into them and keeps asbestos from contaminating the entire room. Keeping the insulation wet keeps fibers contained as well.

I'm an Oregonian so my first winter in the Midwest was a bit of a shock but I was always really pleased with the fact that the liquor stores are always open, no matter the weather. During what even Chicago called a "snowpocalypse" I walked three miles in a foot of snow to get Fireball and I'm damn proud of it.

I'm from AZ, I lived in Chicago for 5 years and... uh, yeah, the day it snowed officially 18" / unofficially over 2' in many areas I went and jumped through alleys because there were several feet of snow in the alleys. Because I was a dumb, dumb, dumb 23 year old. =)

The first time it was below zero (was something like -35 with the windchill) I went outside to see what that was like. It was painful.

Oooh ooh I got you. Some good ones of relative late:

- Black Mirror: takes a look at the EVILS of TECHNOLOGY because we all know it to be true. Each episode is standalone, has a different cast, plot, and characters, so you can watch them in pretty much any order you want. Some take place in the near-future, some in the far-future. Seasons 1 and 2 (there's only 3 episodes per season) are on Netflix.

- Orphan Black: revolves around cloning, ethics, and just the general shit that happens when you randomly come across your genetic clones. The main character plays a good 5-6 characters on the show, and does a phenomenal job. Summary probably can't do it justice. I think it's on Netflix(?) or Hulu. One or the other.

- Utopia: kinda nuts, involves a mysterious comic book. Unfortunately getting cancelled soon, although I hear there's an American re-do coming out at some point. I... am not sure where this one's available legally.

My descriptions don't really do them justice. But I think they are all worth a watch. Black Mirror is definitely the easiest to swallow with the 6 episodes. If you can find the Christmas Special, it's got JON HAMM.

We don't gamble much either. We used to go for the buffets and maybe play a few slots while there, but the whole idea of getting a good deal on food isn't how it used to be. I guess there are too many casinos now. So it probably isn't like it was there either.

It's a British show, but I don't think it's on BBC. I think it's like, 'channel 4' or something there?

Black Mirror is really good. Maybe... don't start with the first one if you are adverse to the subject matter. It's a really good episode, and definitely has a good commentary on social media, but don't think that all of the episodes are like that. They all have to do with different things!

Also: prepare for sadness after watching most some of them.

My boo had an eye taken out last year, after several surgeries trying to fix it, and complications that made it impossible to fix. AND she gets benadryl and antacids and blood pressure meds and some probiotic-type stuff for her kidneys every day. AND fluids once a week, which I may need to crank up to twice. But she has still managed to be a bouncy, sweet girl. She ran up and down the hall a little this morning, even, which is always heartwrenchingly encouraging. Being bouncy is her way of letting me know she is feeling good despite all her troubles.

But snuggly is good, too. She is an excellent snuggler. :)

She has become an astoundingly good patient. I am actually pleasantly surprised by how cooperative she can be, though I probably shouldn't be - she is a smart girl and knows what's good for her. Going through the eye thing and coming out of it bouncy again, after about three months of misery, really sealed the deal on the whole "Hooman can be trusted to help" thing too.

The way I figure it, she was totally low-maintenance for most of the first 13 years I had her, so a little extra work right now isn't such a burden.

As for the bouncy, know that she has a white under-tail. It flags like a deer tail when she zooms down the hall. When she is feeling really feisty she bunny-runs, front feet then back feet. Cutest. Thing. Ever.

I just spent a good 20 minutes talking to my wife about why I am going to a zoo when I am on a business trip. That place looks AMAZING (and will give me an excuse to pack my camera and lenses).

Beertopia / Crescent Moon, Jakes, and some of the local breweries were the ones that caught my attention. And ironically, the Hy-Vee in Council Bluffs... LOL (safer to drink at the hotel anyway).

I grew up with trains (learned to count and read from trains after growing up living across the street from the entrance to a switchyard which was on a track which led to the local mines). I have an old Lionel set and have loved trains my whole life... I may check it out. Thanks!

Wear layers so you can take some off when you're in there, though (and the desert dome, and other habitat buildings). It's quite hot and humid. I regretted my clothing decisions.

There's a stretch of road in the Benson neighborhood where Jake's is that has Krug Park (like 26 great tap beers) as well as Infusion Brewery and Benson Brewery (plus a Beercade if you're into that kind of thing...in addition to having arcade games, their taps are great) all within about three blocks of each other, so you can just walk from place to place. Crescent Moon is good for beer and also food, but it's also kind of all by its lonesome over there. The stretch in Benson is much better if you don't want to drive between a bunch of places (Omaha's major drawback is that you have to drive every freaking where), and it's a great spot to just wander from bar to bar.

If you end up at Infusion, make sure to do their suggested mix of the Vanilla Bean Blonde and one of their darker beers..I think it's the Butcher Block Brown, but it might also be the Joel Porter...it will say on the menu. Hy-Vee has good selection, and so does Baker's, if you're looking at taking it back to the hotel.

I hope you enjoy! Omaha probably won't ever be a hot bed of tourism, but it's definitely a lot better now than it was 10 years ago. :)

Good advice! The Lied Jungle is definitely my favorite, but you're right, it's very muggy in there.

Holy moly! Thank you for all of the great information. I put this out there just kind of hoping someone would notice, but wasn't expecting this level of detail. You rock!

And I live in AZ currently, kingdom of sprawl, I know ALL about having to drive everywhere. I generally get some stuff at stores to consume at the hotel and some to fly back with (I've become really good at packing my checked luggage in this regard - gallon ziploc bags are your friends).

And based on the current tap listing at Krug? I want to be there now.

Noted. Layers is great advice. I learned that in Chicago, but have forgotten a lot since then. (Going to the botanical gardens there during the winter? that was fun... 0F outside, ~80F inside).

Any time! Always glad to help promote my home state. :) Especially that area, which is only really recently awesome, so not a lot of non-locals know of it. I was home last year for my birthday and we did a bar crawl in that area, and it was a blast. Krug doesn't have TVs though, so bring a book or something if you don't feel like talking to people. :)

Perhaps a smaller-scale recreation of an Epic Mealtime creation? Or maybe not smaller-scale if enough people are coming. Either way you might wanna stock up on bacon strips beforehand.

When I was in Brookings, SD. I ended up talking to the locals when I went to the bars there. Worst case scenario, I always have my phone. But seriously, I feel like I am in your debt. This information was wonderful.

I feel like our conversations always follow some kind of 'oh god bouncy fun times happy happy joy joy' and then one of us stays something depressing and it goes like that for a post or two and then it's right back into happy happy joy joy.

...kind of like Ren and Stimpy.
